HOW TO WRITE A SHORT STORY 

I will describe an inspiring experience I had in 2011 in Guwahati when I attended a short story writing class - taught by a young American (?) lady teacher - along with some eager school boys and school girls of St. Stephen's School on G.S. Road, Guwahati, capital of Assam State.

I was told by a young daughter of an unemployed brother-in-law (the girl was then probably a class 9 student of above-mentioned school) that a free short story class would be held, and being interested I told her if I could join the class as a student, and when she confirmed yes I could, I attended the free short story writing class which was held inside church building on G.S. Road very near St. Stephen's School. At the end of the brief short story writing course, we were told to write a short story and submitted our short stories for comments. I cannot recall the title of My short story and also I don't remember what the short story was about, but I have preserved the lady teacher's hand-written review of My short story (I do not know the name of the young American lady teacher, so typical of the behavior/behaviour of KSG):

Very good story! - Nice original title. The time and place are clearly defined. You give relevant details in a logical sequence, and most importantly, you told how you felt. You described how the events made you feel.

The only thing I can say right now is that you could use a little more descriptive language. Imagery always helps a story.

I constantly remember the advice of great teacher HARRY SHEFTER, Professor of English at New York University: DON'T OVER-DESCRIBE!

I bought a copy of Agatha Christie's THE ABC MURDERS today. (I don't mean ABC murders occurred today.) I live in Tarun Nagar area in Guwahati near ABC bus stop on G.S. Road. I have glanced through the Hercule Poirot mystery (detective Hercule Poirot solving a serial killer mystery) which seems to be connected with KSG family!... Many book reviews of THE ABC MURDERS on YouTube indicate that this particular Hercule Poirot mystery is very popular! - G
