Sp. and I was requested by Dr. Akashitora to go through her works of fiction and I wished her success as an author. I have been dipping into her fiction books from time to time and to put it frankly her books are not like the classic novels of Tolstoy or Turgenev or Dostoevsky but on the other hand her stories and essays seem to reflect real first-hand authentic genuine experiences of the female characters in her books and should appeal to many female readers.

From the titles, I thought the books are autobiographical stories of a prostitute, though not porn, but glancing rapidly through the stories, it seems that these are stories of a prostitute in several body forms. The essays and stories give the impression that the "heroines" have very immature personalities who cannot think beyond sex and sex.

O. Henry: AN UNFINISHED STORY (abridged)

I had a dream. Gabriel had played his trump; and those of us who could not follow suit sere arraigned for examination. 

A fly cop - an angel policeman - flew over to me and took me by the left wing. Near at hand was a group of very prosperous-looking spirits arraigned for judgment.

"Do you belong with that bunch?" the policeman asked. 

"Who are they?" was my answer.

"Why," said he, "they are -"

But this irrelevant stuff is taking up space that the story should occupy.

Dulcie worked in a department store. Of what she earned, Dulcie received six dollars per week. I will tell you how she lived in six dollars per week. 

One afternoon at six, Dulcie said to her chum, Sadie: "Say, Sade, I made a date for dinner this evening with Piggy."

"You never did!" exclaimed Sadie admiringly. "Well, ain't you the lucky one? Piggy's an awful swell; and he always takes a girl to swell places. You'll have a swell time, Dulce."

Dulcie hurried homeward. Her eyes were shining, and her cheeks showed the delicate pink of life's approaching dawn. It was Friday; and she had fifty cents left of her last week's wages.

The streets were filled with the rush-hour floods of people. The electric lights of Broadway were glowing. Men in accurate clothes turned and stared at Dulcie as she sped, unheeding, past them. 

Dulcie stopped in a store where goods were cheap and bought an imitation collar with her fifty cents. That money was to have been spent otherwise - fifteen cents for supper, ten cents for breakfast, ten cents for lunch. Another dime was to be added to her small store of savings; and five cents was to be squandered for licorice drops. The licorice was an extravagance - almost a carouse - but what is life without pleasures?

Dulcie lived in a furnished room. There is this difference between a furnished room and a boarding-house. In a furnished room, other people do not know it when you go hungry. 

Dulcie went up to her room. She lit the gas. In its one-fourth-candlepower glow we will observe the room. 

Couch-bed, dresser, table, washstand, chair - of this much the landlady was guilty. The rest was Dulcie's. On the dresser were her treasures - a gilt china vase presented to her by Sadie, a book on the divination of dreams, and a cluster of artificial cherries tied with a pink ribbon. 

Against the wrinkly mirror stood pictures of General Kitchener, William Muldoon, the Duchess of Marlborough, and Benvenuto Cellini.

Piggy was to call for her at seven. Piggy needs but a word. When the girls named him, an undeserving stigma was cast upon the noble family of swine. The words-of-three-letters lesson in the old blue spelling book begins with Piggy's biography. He was fat; he had the soul of a rat, the habits of a bat, and the magnanimity of a cat ... He wore expensive clothes; and was a connoisseur in starvation. He could look at a shop-girl and tell you to an hour how long it had been since she had eaten anything more nourishing than marshmallows and tea. He hung about the shopping districts and prowled around in department stores with his invitations to dinner. Men who escort dogs upon the streets at the end of a string look down upon him. 

At ten minutes to seven Dulcie was ready. She looked at herself in the wrinkly mirror. The reflection was satisfactory. The dark blue dress, fitting without a wrinkle, the hat with its jaunty black feather, the but-slightly-soiled gloves - all representing self-denial, even of food itself - were vastly becoming.

Dulcie forgot everything else for a moment except that she was beautiful, and that life was about to lift a corner of its mysterious veil for her to observe its wonders. No gentleman had ever asked her out before. Now she was going for a brief moment into the glitter and exalted show.

The girls said that Piggy was a "spender". There would be a grand dinner, and music, and splendidly dressed ladies to look at, and things to eat that strangely twisted the girls' jaws when they tried to tell about them. No doubt she would be asked out again. 

Somebody knocked at the door. Dulcie opened it. The landlady stood there with a spurious smile. 

"A gentleman's downstairs to see you," she said. "Name is Mr. Wiggins."

By such epithet was Piggy known to unfortunate ones who had to take him seriously. 

Dulcie turned to the dresser to get her handkerchief; and then she stopped still, and bit her underlip hard. While looking in her mirror she had seen fairyland and herself, a princess, just awakening from a long slumber. She had forgotten one that was watching her with sad, beautiful, stern eyes - the only one there was to approve or condemn what she did. Straight and slender and tall, with a look of sorrowful reproach on his handsome, melancholy face, General Kitchener fixed his wonderful eyes on her out of his gilt photograph frame on the dresser. 

Dulcie turned like an automatic doll to the landlady. 

"Tell him I can't go," she said dully. "Tell him I'm sick, or something. Tell him I'm not going out."

After the door was closed and locked, Dulcie fell upon her bed, and cried for ten minutes. General Kitchener was her only friend. He was Dulcie's ideal of a gallant knight. He looked as if he might have a secret sorrow, and his wonderful moustache was a dream, and she was a little afraid of that stern yet tender look in his eyes. She used to have little fancies that he would call at the house sometime, and ask for her, with his sword clanking against his high boots. Once, when a boy was rattling a piece of chain against a lamp-post, she had opened the window and looked out. But there was no use. She knew that General Kitchener was away over in Japan, leading his army against the savage Turks; and he would never step out of his gilt frame for her. Yet one look from him had vanquished Piggy that night. Yes, for that night.

When her cry was over Dulcie got up and took off her best dress, and put on her old blue kimono. She wanted no dinner. And she drew up a chair to the rickety table, and told her fortune with an old deck of cards.

"The horrid, impudent thing!" she said aloud. "And I never gave him a word or a look to make him think it!"

At nine o'clock Dulcie took a tin box of crackers and a little pot of raspberry jam out of her trunk, and had a feast. She offered General Kitchener some jam on a cracker; but he only looked at her as the sphinx would have looked at a butterfly - if there are butterflies in the desert. 

"Don't eat it if you don't want to," said Dulcie. "And don't put on so many airs and scold so with your eyes. I wonder if you'd be so superior and snippy if you had to live on six dollars a week."

It was not a good sign for Dulcie to be rude to General Kitchener. And then she turned Benvenuto Cellini face downward with a severe gesture.

At half-past nine Dulcie took a last look at the pictures on the dresser, turned out the light, and skipped into bed. It's an awful thing to go to bed with a good-night look at General Kitchener, William Muldoon, the Duchess of Marlborough, and Benvenuto Cellini. This story really doesn't get anywhere at all. The rest of it comes later - sometime when Piggy asks Dulcie again to dine with him, and she is feeling lonelier than usual, and General Kitchener happens to be looking the other way; and then - 

As I said before, I dreamed that I was standing near a crowd of prosperous-looking angels, and a policeman took me by the wing and asked if I belonged with them.

"Who are they?" I asked.

"Why," said he, "they are the men who hired working-girls, and paid 'em five or six dollars a week to live on. Are you one of the bunch?"

"Not on your immortality," said I. "I'm only the fellow that set fire to an orphan asylum, and murdered a blind man for his pennies."

In abridging a story, I always quote the exact words from that story. By the way, I suspect that General Kitchener is a parody of KSG. - G

NOTE: The world's TOP writers have kept on getting reborn into new reincarnations again and again, and have lived INSIDE & ON Earth in many different forms for billions of years. O. Henry may be the pen name (pseudonym) of a top female writer, just as George Eliot is said to be the pen name of Mary Ann Evans! I think the short story AN UNFINISHED STORY is a metaphorical story about God ("General Kitchener" in the story) vs Satan ("Piggy" in the story) and "O. Henry" was eager to know how God vs pathetic Satan would finish. "O. Henry" now knows that SATAN is FINISHED!

Shepherd. A birth and christening. I think I can see another in her eye already.

[Shepherd's wife turns away.

Constable. Late to be traipsing along this coomb - hey, stranger?

Timothy. Late it is, master, as you say. (Walks aside, wiping his face.) But those in chase of me will be later!... Lord save me!... I'd almost as soon have stayed to be hanged as bear the strain of this escape! (Aside.)

Shepherd. And what's the latest news from Casterbridge, stranger? Going to hang-fair to-morrow, like other folk, I suppose?

Timothy (with a start). I - hadn't heard of it.

Constable. What - not about this sheepstealer, that was tried last 'size and is waiting his awful doom in Casterbridge jail?  Yes - he's to be turned off to-morrow morning.

Timothy. I - suppose you are going with the rest?

Constable. Well, no. As a gover'ment officer I've seed fifteen strung up, man and boy; and there's a same-ness in it after a while; and 'tis bad for the nerves. Yes, his time is getting short.

Shepherd. In a few hours we shall have the folk hurrying past here to get to the sight early.

Serpent Player. 'Twasn't one of your sheep that a' stole, shepherd?

Shepherd. Oh no. I haven't lost one this winter. 'Twas from some farm up by Shottsford. I don't know the place at all.

Serpent Player. Who'll do the gallus job now our hangman is dead?

Constable. They'll have to send for a new hand, I reckon. 

Shepherd's Wife. Well, Heaven send that they let the poor man drop easy, though some die hard, that's true ....

Timothy (to Shepherd's Wife). I'll take a seat in the chimney-corner if you've nothing to say against it, ma'am? 

Shepherd's Wife. Ay, sure. (He enters chimney-corner and stretches out legs.) Your boots are the worse for wear.

Timothy. Yes. And I am not well fitted, either. I have seen some rough times lately, and have been forced to pick up what I could get in the way of wearing but I must find a suit better fitted for working days when I get home.

Shepherd's Wife. One of hereabouts?

Timothy. Not quite, ma'am. Further up the country. 

Shepherd's Wife. I thought so. And so be I. And by your tongue you seem to come from my neighbourhood. 

Timothy (hastily). But you would hardly have heard of me. (Blandly) My time would be long before yours, ma'am, you see .... Really, if I'd not met you here as a married woman, I should have said to 'ee 'My dear young girl !'

Shepherd's Wife (simpering) Get along with thee!

Timothy. Really, I should ! When was you married, ma'am ? Last year?

Shepherd's Wife. I've been married five years and have three children. 

Timothy. No ! Impossible ! Really, married women shouldn't look such maiden deceptions. 'Tisn't moral of 'em! 

Shepherd's Wife. Ah - poor man. (To Shepherd, who has been helping guests to liquor). Pour out some for the stranger. I never met a civiller man.

Hangman (spreading himself in chair). Well, well, as I say, I am going to Casterbridge and to Casterbridge I must go. I should have been almost there by this time if the rain hadn't driven me in here and I'm not sorry for it.

Shepherd. You don't live in Casterbridge, sir, seemingly?

Hangman. Not as yet; I shortly mean to move there.

Shepherd. Going to set up in trade, perhaps?

Shepherd's Wife. No, no. It is easy to see that the gentleman is rich and don't need to work at anything. 

Hangman (after a pause). Rich is not quite the word, for me, dame. I do work and must work. And even if I only get to Casterbridge by midnight I must get to work then by eight to-morrow morning .... Yes, het or wet, blow or snow, famine or sword, my day's work to-morrow must be done. 

[Timothy Sommers droops in agitation.

Shepherd's Wife. Indeed! Then in spite o' seeming, you are worse off than we?

Hangman. It lies rather in the nature of my trade, men and maidens, it is the peculiarity of my business more than my poverty....

Shepherd. And as to this trade of yours, what did you say it might be? [To Hangman.

Others. The man condemned for sheepstealing, what we were talking of ! - the poor clockmaker who used to live at Shottsford ! His family were starving, and so he went out of Shottsford by the high road, and took a sheep in open daylight .... He (pointing to the Hangman) is come from up the country to do it. Then it's he who is going to have the berth here now our own man [ex hangman who has expired] is dead !

Timothy (sings). 'Are implements enough for me !' [Clinks cups with the Hangman.

Hangman. Next verse. (Sings.)

'To-morrow is - ' (knocking without).

[Shepherd rises.

Constable. Another of 'em?

Several. What do it mean?

Shepherd. Walk in !

[Enter Joseph Sommers, begins wiping shoes. 

Joseph. Can you tell me the way to - (starts) My brother Timothy - escaped - sitting with his own hangman ! (Aside.)

Hangman (sings).

'To-morrow is my working day,

Simple shepherds all, - 

To-morrow is a working day for me;

For the farmer's sheep is slain, and the lad who did it ta'en - 

And on his soul may God ha' mer-cy !

Hee-hee !

 

Timothy (waving cup, joins in). 'And on his soul may God ha' mer-cy !'

[Joseph Sommers staggers and nearly falls in fit. Exit Joseph Simmers, slamming door.

Shepherd. What man could he be?

[Silence. Company stare at Hangman. Rain without. Timothy Sommers smokes unconcerned. Report of a gun.

Hangman (jumping up). Be jiggered ! (Rope falls on floor). The prison gun !

Timothy. What does that mean?

Shepherd's Wife. A prisoner escaped from the jail - that's what it means !

Timothy (after a pause). I've often been told that in this country they fire a gun at such times, but I never heard it till now.

Hangman. I wonder if it is my man?

Shepherd. Surely it is ! And surely we've seen him! The little man who knocked at the door by now, and quivered Iike a leaf when he saw 'ee and heard your song !

Shepherd's Wife. Yes ! His teeth chattered, and the breath went out of his body !

Constable. And his heart seemed to sink within him like a stone.

Others. And he bolted as if he'd been shot at.

Timothy. True - true. His teeth chattered, and his heart seemed to sink, and he bolted as if he'd been short at.

Hangman. I didn't notice it.

Damsel. We were all wondering what made him run off in such a fright, and now 'tis explained !

[Gun at slow intervals. 

Hangman. Is there a parish constable here? If so, let him step forward. (Constable advances, Damsel abandoning him reluctantly and sobbing over back of chair.) You are a sworn constable?

Constable. I be, sir !

Hangman. Then pursue the criminal at once with assistance, and bring him back. He can't have gone far.

Joseph. Sir, the time has come when I might as well speak. I have done nothing; my crime is that the condemned man is my brother. 

Several. His brother!

Joseph. Yes. Early this afternoon I left home to tramp to Casterbridge gaol to bid him farewell. I was benighted and called here to rest and ask the way. 

Hangman. Like myself.

Joseph. When I opened the door I saw before me the very man, sir, my brother, Tim, that I thought to see in the condemned cell at Casterbridge. He was in this chimney-corner and jammed close to him was the executioner who had come to take his life -

Hangman. According to law, according to law!

Joseph. And singing a song about it, and my brother joining in to save appearances.

Hangman. A deceitful rascal ! How I do despise a man who don't die legal. 

Joseph. Tim threw a look of agony upon me, sir, and I knew it meant 'Don't reveal what you see - my life depends on it !' I was so terrified that I turned and hurried away.

Magistrate. And do you know where your brother is at present?

Joseph. I do not. I have not seen him since I closed the door.

Constable. I can testify to that.

Magistrate. Where does he think to fly to - what's his occupation?

Joseph. A watch and clock maker, sir.

Constable. 'A said 'a was a wheelwright - a wicked rogue !

Shepherd. He meant the wheels of clocks and watches perhaps. I thought his hands were whitish for his trade.

Magistrate. Well, it appears to me that nothing can be gained by retaining this poor man in custody. Your business lies with the other unquestionably. 

[Enter a peasant, boy, etc.

Boy. And he's gone far enough !

Peasant. Yes - he's gone! Nobody can find he tonight; and by to-morrow morning he'll be half across the Channel.

Hangman. 'Twas an unprincipled thing! To cheat an honest man of his perquisites, and take away his trade. How am I to live ?

Shepherd's Wife. I'm unlawfully glad of it. He was a nice civil man and his punishment would have been too heavy for his sin. So brave and daring and cool as he was to sit here as he did ! I pray they'll never catch him. And I hope that you, sir, will never do your morning's work at Casterbridge, or meet our friend anywhere for business purposes.

Shepherd. Well, neighbours, I don't see why our christening party should be cut short by such a' onseemly interruption. Another jig, friends! We don't have a baby every day !

Women. God forbid !

Shepherd. Come then, choose your partners; form in line, and to it again till daylight.

Hangman. Wi' all my heart ! My day's work being lost, faith, I may as well make a night of it, too, and hope for better luck at the next assizes ! 

Shepherd. Now start the tune, fiddler !

[They form again for the six-hands-round. Hangman tries to get each woman severally as partner, all refuse. At last Hangman dances in the figure by himself, with an imaginary partner, and pulls out rope. Joseph Sommers looks on pensively.

Late at night on 31st January 2025 when all members of the family of BM BIL1 C.B. and a BM guest and a BM helper girl were sleeping, a plastic tanker and plastic buckets, kept in the veranda, burned and the crackling noise of burning woke them up and caused panic and all managed to douse the fire with water. The fire was not caused by an electric short circuit. The only reasonable explanation I can think of is burning of the plastic tanker and the plastic buckets BY LASER. (I think it very unlikely that a thief or thieves caused the fire in C.B.)

About a year ago, three bikes belonging to the sons of BM BIL1 C.B. and another BM C.B., parked in the compound of 4 BILs C.B. GASS., DISAPPEARED at night when all were asleep. When informed, local police checked CCTV footage of a NEARBY house's CCTV covering the road but police did not see "bike thieves" running away with the bikes in the CCTV footage. The only SCIENTIFIC explanation for the disappearance of the 3 bikes at night I can think of was vaporization of the the 3 metallic bikes in C.B. GASS. by invisible burning LASER.

U.S. and Russian space satellites in the sky watching and recording everyone continuously can confirm the burning of the plastic tanker and plastic buckets in C.B. and the vaporization of the three bikes in C.B. seemingly without cause IF the burning and vaporization in C.B. But the novel may be a realistic portrayal of what goes on in reality: "husbands" acting as PIMPS for their "wives" and daughters engaging in the business of prostitution. This book reviewer is not sure of French pronunciations - I started learning French but there was a break in learning due to fighting and overpowering Evil Home Snake and Other Evil Snakes - I found out from Google that Monsieur means Mr./Mister, Monseigneur means Prince. I wondered if Alexandre is a female name, but Google says that Alexander (a male name) is the English spelling and Alexandre is the spelling in French etc. (I don't see how Alexander means "a defender of mankind"; I don't know Greek!). After comments on THE THREE MUSKETEERS (a well-known novel by Alexandre Dumas), the book reviewer starts her interesting summary and comments from about 3:28 of this video; she remarks that she finds the ARROGANT women in the novel quite hilarious, e.g. a lady who happens to be a mistress (a "kept" - a private prostitute, to put it bluntly). It is easy to lose sight of the main idea of a novel because of details. I am SURE the novel would have a HAPPY "vibe" if the author REVISED IT NOW.

Making the massage oil for use with potato described in this video is so simple that even an अनाड़ी cook can do it - mix turmeric powder with mustard oil and heat gently for a few minutes! Even a home sn. sp. can be told to prepare the massage oil in the kitchen lab if home sn. sp. is closely watched during the very short time it would take to make the massage oil. Then slice a potato in half and put massage oil on a half-slice of the potato with which rub affected knee joints!

It is obvious that the guy is a liberal like Me. (Even after listening to the guy's talk twice, I don't understand what he means. It would have been helpful if he had mentioned WHERE the passage occurs in the Quran - the chapter and verse of the Quran - because I could LOCATE the passage in the excellent English translation of the Quran that I bought many years ago out of intellectual curiosity from the same roadside bookshop near Paltan Bazar masjid (opp. ASTC) I mention in the following post under the title HINDUISM AND ISLAM - My copy of the Quran is a bilingual translation with original Arabic and English translation on facing pages - I don't understand Arabic script which looks like Pitman's shorthand symbols nor do I know Arabic -  I buy and stock lots of interesting books for future reading -I have read only a few sentences from the Quran so far, which are terrifying descriptions of HELL (of course I have translations of the Gita and the Ramayan and the Mahabharat and the Puran and the Bible in English and some Indian languages) - nowhere else have I found a terrifying passage comparable to the terrifying passages in the Quran except the HORRIFYING story in the Mahabharata where Krishna orders a king to slice his own body in half with his sword in front of his queen to prove his devotion to Krishna - a nasty Demon.
